Neal McSpadden
Defending Small Business Through Smarter Money, Taxes, and Systems
Neal McSpadden’s journey into tax and business strategy wasn’t linear. It was forged through hard lessons, unlikely detours, and a defining moment of clarity that forever changed the course of his career. Today, as founder of Tax Sherpa, he helps small business owners stop flying blind with their money and equips them with the tools, strategies, and systems to thrive. But the roots of his mission trace back to Georgia Tech, a moment inside an AMD auditorium, and a $1.3 million IRS letter.
From Circuits to Systems Thinking
At Georgia Tech, Neal discovered two skills that would shape his career: the discipline of grit and grind, learning how to push through difficult challenges, and the meta-skill of systems thinking. Electrical engineering taught him to see how individual parts interact within a larger system, an approach that later became the foundation of his unique way of understanding businesses and finances.
A pivotal moment came during an internship at AMD in Austin, Texas, in 2000. As the company celebrated its groundbreaking 1-gigahertz processor launch, Neal sat in an auditorium watching an employee praised for canceling a prepaid family vacation to work through the launch. The lesson was clear: in that corporate world, loyalty to the company outweighed balance, family, and freedom. Neal walked out with conviction: this wasn’t the life he wanted.
The Decade of Wandering
Rejecting the corporate track left Neal searching. He spent nearly a decade in what he calls his “Decade of Wandering” — tending bars, delivering lost luggage, trading stocks and options, investing in real estate, and even earning an appraiser’s license just to better understand property deals.
Those years taught him two priceless truths. First, business is everywhere, even in simple services like luggage delivery. Second, entrepreneurial success demands real skills in marketing, packaging, and sales, not just technical ability. He learned by trial and error, sometimes with wins, often with costly losses.
The most painful came in 2007, when his thinly capitalized real estate investments collapsed ahead of the 2008 crash. Broke and tutoring high school students to get by, Neal’s struggles were about to take a sharper turn.
The IRS Letter That Changed Everything
In 2007, Neal began receiving IRS letters claiming he owed over $1.3 million in taxes — the result of misunderstood stock trades and missing cost-basis data. Like most people, he ignored the first notices, until garnished paychecks left him with $100 take-home. “You don’t know what you don’t know,” Neal says now, reflecting on that period. “And it can cost you everything.”
Desperate, he found a former Wall Street tax attorney who not only helped him resolve his own crisis but also became his mentor. Neal repaid the help by bringing order to the attorney’s disorganized practice, while learning advanced tax strategies that had once been reserved for Wall Street specialists.
This unlikely pairing of business operations skill and deep tax expertise gave Neal his calling.
From Apprentice to Founder
Over the next decade, Neal worked on more than 50,000 tax returns, serving thousands of families and businesses across industries. He developed particular depth in online businesses, construction and real estate, and later cryptocurrency taxation. Along the way, he saw just how underserved small business owners were compared to high-net-worth clients who could afford $20,000–$100,000 tax strategists.
In 2020, Neal launched Tax Sherpa with a simple mission: defend small business owners from unnecessary taxation and empower their growth through smarter planning and operations.
Covid-19 complicated the launch, and a severe bout of long Covid nearly shuttered the business in 2021. But through recovery, persistence, and rebuilding, Tax Sherpa emerged stronger — with new tools, new frameworks, and a sharper focus than ever.
A Mission to Defend Small Business
Neal knows small business from the inside out — as an entrepreneur, as someone who’s lost it all, and as an advisor who has saved clients hundreds of thousands of dollars through overlooked deductions, better structuring, and proactive planning.
His philosophy is simple: no business is too small for tax strategy. Every entrepreneur deserves the relief of clarity, the confidence of control, and the ability to use their books as a planning tool instead of a compliance burden.
Through frameworks like the Clear Path Accounting Method, the Money Compass, and his “Summit Strategy Session” approach, Neal translates abstract tax code into actionable steps that reduce stress, cut tax bills, and free owners to focus on growth.
As Neal puts it:
“My mission is to defend small businesses from unnecessary taxation and strengthen their growth through smarter planning and operations, keeping resources with entrepreneurs, not politicians.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Neal is finishing his upcoming book, Become a Money Pilot: Use Clear Path Accounting to Pilot Your Business with the Money Compass and Finally Stop Flying Blind. The book is both a credibility marker and a guide teaching small business owners how to navigate finances with confidence.
His press package supports upcoming speaking engagements, media appearances, and partnerships, with a vision to reach and empower thousands more entrepreneurs.
Because for Neal McSpadden, the mission is personal: small business owners deserve more than survival. They deserve freedom, clarity, and the tools to thrive.

What exactly is tax advisory, and why is it crucial for my business?

How often should I meet with a tax advisor, and what can I expect from these consultations?
The frequency of meetings depends on your business's complexity and your personal preferences. During these consultations, we'll review your current financial situation, discuss any changes in your business or goals, and adjust our strategies accordingly to optimize tax savings.

I've heard about extensions for tax filings. How do they work, and should I consider one?
An extension allows you additional time to file your tax return, but not to pay any taxes owed. If you anticipate needing more time to gather documentation or for any other reason, we can assist in filing an extension for you. However, it's essential to estimate and pay any taxes owed by the original deadline to avoid potential penalties and interest.

I'm a small business owner who's managed my own books until now. When should I consider professional bookkeeping services?

If you find yourself spending excessive time on your books, missing out on tax-saving opportunities, or feeling unsure about your financial records' accuracy, it might be time to consider professional bookkeeping services. By doing so, you can ensure accuracy, save time, and focus on what you do best—running your business.
